Jumpstart is a web-based design discipline directory.
The world of design disciplines has become interwoven with the invention of digital technologies and the emergence of new fields. Design education no longer focuses solely on hard-skill training, but explores design from all angles while cultivating transferable critical thinking methods. In this context, recognizing the interconnected nature of design disciplines can serve as a lens for self-discovery.
Jumpstart provides an accessible experience and database to help students and designers explore how each field contributes to the broader design ecosystem, and how they can start potential pathways toward unique careers from Pratt Institute.
Dynamic Identity System
The identity system is built around a flexible logo in which the dot functions as a replaceable element, capable of transforming into discipline-specific icons. Each discipline is represented by its own icon, derived from shared visual attributes, while remaining fluid to reflect how individuals can form unique identities as they carve out their own place within the design landscape.
Motion plays a central role in the system as well. The bouncing dot animates the identity and echoes the project’s name, Jumpstart, reinforcing ideas of movement, exploration, and momentum.
Website Design
The platform is designed for both emerging designers seeking direction and experienced practitioners looking to develop a specialization.
The user journey begins on a borderless, interactive homepage that invites exploration and serves as a visual metaphor for the vast and interconnected design world. From there, sorting and search tools help users tailor their exploration or reframe disciplines through different perspectives. Discipline previews offer concise overviews and reveal relationships between fields through shared skills, while dedicated discipline pages provide rich, well-organized information that supports deeper learning and next steps.
